iPhone Signal Icon - Please Help!

I have been trying to figure out what this little icon means on my iPhone 3G - Does anyone know!? Please help!
The only clue I can give you is that the signal seems to be of lower quality when I do notice it. The other caller’s voices begin to get choppy, and eventually a dropped call seems to be the end result!
