My Theory to the TRUTH Behind MTV’s New MTVMusic.com Venture

Overstepping YouTube’s commitment, MTV recently made the bold move to introduce a free website service that is growing daily with the intent to host and freely share virtually every music video made in history. MTV’s new MTVMusic.com venture is touting the fact that they are adding thousands of new music videos to the service every week, and offering them completely free.

Beyond the ability to watch these videos directly from the website, they are highly recommending and encouraging people to embed the videos, and share them with the world on their own Websites, Forums, Facebook & Myspace pages, or anywhere you can embed the video’s unique code.

I have read several articles that wonder why, and how they are able to offer this service for free! There are no advertisements on the website that would earn income. Some speculate that MTV is trying to regenerate the old reputation that MTV used to have, which is a focus on MUSIC! Although this may be true, I think there is much more to the story!

MTV is owned by Viacom, a large media and marketing company. If my theory is correct, Viacom is using their MTV resource, and this new MTVMusic.com venture as a sort of Trojan Horse approach of eventually injecting advertisements in to every page, site, post, or location that anyone originally posted these videos offered for free by the MTVMusic service. This is similar to the way Google works, in giving away great services that eventually turns into an advertisement platform.

Giving away free product and service that grows exponentially because of its quality and usefulness is an extremely resourceful way of laying the foundation for a highly profitable advertisement platform. Viacom is in the business of exposing advertisements to the largest number of eyes as possible, and this is a sneaky, and therefore extremely tactile way of growing their business.
